Brian Fried talks about what is involved to move your invention idea forward.
First you must challenge it to see if it already exists and if it is something that you can get intellectual property protection on.
Next he advises that you make a prototype of your idea and get it as close to the real thing as possible.
After you comes up with a successful prototype you will want to protect your idea with a provisional patent application, which will give you the right for one year to say that you're idea is patent pending while you explore the market.
At that point you will want to work with other product designers or engineers to determine how much it might cost to manufacture as well as if it is licensable.
